What is hardscape?
Hardscape is the hard material used to landscape that can still be moved. For example, decorative rocks, gravel, pavers or tile. Hardscape can include decorative or practical materials and appliances.
How to lay pavers
Mark the perimeter where you would like to install pavers with wooden stakes and line it with a mason line. Clear the area of grass and dirt with a shovel. Level the area and keep in mind, you will need to install about 4 inches of gravel and 1 inch of paver sand before laying the pavers. Spread the gravel and slightly wet it before covering with sand and leveling with a conduit. Start in the corner and begin laying your pavers. Keep them tight together and work outwards. Use landscape nails to place edging stone around the area. Follow these steps to get a rockin paver patio!

Pavers are pieces of tiles or bricks that are made out of clay, stone, brick, or concrete. Pavers can come in different colors and are great to use for driveways, pathways, and walkways.
How many pavers do I need?
How many pavers you need for a project will depend on the area you are laying pavers. You can have a professional come out and give you an estimation, or you can measure the area yourself. To do it yourself, use the following formulas:
Area Size: (length of area in feet) x (width of area in feet) = area in square feet
Paver Size: (length of paver in inches) x (width of paver in inches) ÷ 144 = square footage per piece
Amount of Pavers: (area of project in square feet) ÷ (square footage per piece) = estimated minimum number of pavers Or try using this paver calculator!
What is flagstone?
A sedimentary rock that comes as a flat stone slab, normally square or rectangular shaped and is used for paving.
How to lay flagstone?
You can hire someone to install flagstone for you, or you can give it a go yourself. Plan out your patio and choose your flagstone tile. Dig out the area with a depth of roughly 6 inches so there’s room for a gravel base, leveling materials, and pavers. Add the gravel base and leveling sand and then piece together the flagstone tiles. Place larger tiles on the perimeter and then trim the tiles to fit together how you would like. Level out the stones and fill in the gaps with the material of your choosing!
How much decorative or landscape rock do I need?
You can have a professional come out and give you an estimation or you can measure the area yourself. Start by measuring the area you are filling and converting the inches to feet, then use the following formulas:
Length of Area x Width of Area x Desired Depth= Number of Cubic Feet
Cubic Feet/ 27= Cubic Yards
How to build a retaining wall?
Start by marking the layout of the area in a place where there are no downspouts pointed. Make sure to plan for the mulch or soil to be well below the siding. Determine how many blocks you will need for the project.
Once the area is marked, dig a trench that is roughly twice the width of the block and 4-6 inches deep. Level out the dirt and fill the trench with around 3 inches of paver base and tamp it down.
Begin laying blocks on the end and measure that they are level and evenly lined up. To level out blocks, fill in the paver base underneath or tamp down further. Make sure to sweep the dirt off the top before continuing to the next row.
On the next row, cut a block with a masonry blade to stagger the joints. After building the wall up a few rows, lay down landscaping fabric behind the blocks leaving excess to reach the top of the blocks. Fill directly behind the rocks with gravel and add more rows.
For the last two rows, apply concrete adhesive to the wall block tops before laying more blocks on top of them. Fold the landscaping fabric back and fill in your area with soil and plants!
